At its heart, Chama is proof that the west is still wild ... and proud of it.

Delightfully Unrefined

Located just minutes from the entrance to Canyon Ridge, Chama, New Mexico, is a rough-and-ready 1880's railroad town that has long served as a gravitational hub for train enthusiasts of all ages. Its shops, restaurants, parks, and old-style western saloon and hotels have seen a lot of history and, today, are patronized by thousands of visitors annually who come for a variety of world-class outdoor sporting and recreational activities.

The centerpiece of Chama is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad—the highest narrow-gauge railway in the nation—whose history is inextricably entwined with that of the towns it unites. Operational since the 1880's, with departures daily from May through October, the Cumbres & Toltec offers a jaw-dropping ride through the southern fringes of the majestic Rocky Mountains
